  • We certainly hope to be back, and I want to bring hiking friends too. Thank you Tom for making this corner of this extraordinary environment accessible, comfortable and welcoming, and for enabling a dream to come true. To watch dawn over Dead Horse Point, Pyramid Butte etc every morning to gaze over the seemingly placid Colorado that's created all this scenery to hike from your doorstep to meet Tom and his famous giant tortoise Kobae (who over-winters in San Diego) to light the fire pit as the sun sets to just be there, amongst it all. So: we stayed in Last Hurrah, second house, on Tom's advice (we were after maximum seclusion) for four nights in November 2019 and all expectations and hopes were exceeded. My wife and I have visited several times, staying in Moab and driving to trailheads, 4x4 roads etc, which has been wonderful but when we discovered Tom's Base Camp we knew we had to visit. I've longed to get down amongst this astounding, unique scenery ever since. I first gazed over Canyonlands well over 40 years ago on a vacation with my parents, and I got the bug there and then. He let us use the bathrooms, charge our batteries in his outlets, provided extra water, etc. But even while camping, Tom was the most gracious of hosts. Next time, we'll try to book earlier and get a room. We camped this time, because all the rooms and hogans were sold out. The serene walk through the desert in the cool morning air to visit the Wind Caves. (One night attracted a half dozen fox, a dozen raccoons, a pair of ringtails, and a half dozen skunks!). The kindred mindset of the other folks who take the time and effort to make the drive to get there. The incredible hospitality of Tom and Linda. But, it was the other components that I didn't really know much about that made the place so memorable. Incredible views, challenging holes really great layout on both courses. It's reputation had put it on my bucket list for years, and I finally got to go play it. My motivation in visiting Base Camp was for its disc golf course. We will be back-thanks Tom and Colin for a wonderful visit! … We made the drive in the dark with a Nissan Rogue, though, so that tells you that most vehicles will make it with perseverance.

And we couldn't believe this wild, remote place was still connected to the world by wifi-which let us work from paradise! The road getting there is tough so be sure you have high clearance or a skilled driver (both is ideal). Getting up close and personal with a 200 pound tortoise was also incredible! Tom and Colin welcomed us (and our dog) very warmly, gave us very explicit instructions to find some awesome hikes, and shared some fascinating stories of life at basecamp. The evening feeding was a treat-many foxes and racoons. We were there mid-week in early November and it was soooooo quiet. Outside are beautiful patios all around the house with tons of lounge furniture, even an old-fashioned porch swing.

The house itself is incredibly comfortable with lots of couches, a full kitchen, hot water, and a cozy gas fireplace. Tom's "condo" is really a beautiful two-bedroom house with spectacular views of red rocks, buttes, and the Colorado River just a few steps away. Usually we have to make the trade-off: peace and solitude or a comfortable hotel, but Basecamp has it all. We come to Moab twice a year for mountain-biking, hiking, and solitude.
